THE RED BOOK

Fritz Zwicky's "Red Book" (Catalogue of Selected Compact Galaxies and of Post-Eruptive Galaxies) was compiled by Fritz Zwicky with the collaboration of his wife, Margrit A. Zwicky, and published in 1971. It's often nicknamed "The Red Book" by astronomers.

THE RED BOOK: (Catalogue of Selected Compact Galaxies and of Post-Eruptive Galaxies)

While Zwicky's larger, multi-volume Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies (CGCG) is more commonly used as a general reference today, "The Red Book" remains a historically important and specialized catalog. It was particularly significant for focusing on "compact galaxies," which were crucial for understanding active galactic nuclei and quasars.

MAPPING 11 MILLION GALAXIES Shows a video of how modern astronomers use massive catalogs, the descendants of Zwicky's work, to map the universe.
