PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is the remarkable process where plants act as "solar-powered factories," converting light energy into chemical energy to create their own food. It is the foundation of life on Earth, providing the oxygen we breathe and the energy for almost every food chain.

The Big Picture
The goal of photosynthesis is to take simple ingredients and use sunlight to rearrange them into glucose (sugar/energy) and oxygen.
The Chemical Equation
Mathematically, the process looks like this:
6CO2+6H2O+light energy→C6H12O6+6O2
Reactants (What goes in): 6 molecules of Carbon Dioxide and 6 molecules of Water.
Products (What comes out): 1 molecule of Glucose and 6 molecules of Oxygen (the "waste" product we breathe).
Where It Happens
Photosynthesis takes place inside chloroplasts, which are specialized organelles found mostly in the leaves of plants.Inside the chloroplast, a green pigment called chlorophyll captures the sunlight.
The Two Main Stages
The process is divided into two distinct phases that work together like a relay race.
1. The Light-Dependent Reactions
Location: The Thylakoid membranes (stacks inside the chloroplast).
Action: Sunlight hits the chlorophyll, exciting electrons. This energy is used to split water molecules (H2O) apart.
Outcome: * Oxygen is released into the air.
Energy is stored in two "battery" molecules called ATP and NADPH.
Think of this stage as the "charging" phase.
2. The Light-Independent Reactions (The Calvin Cycle)
Location: The Stroma (the fluid-filled space around the stacks).
Action: This stage doesn't need direct sunlight but uses the "charged batteries" (ATP and NADPH) from the first stage. It takes Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the air and puts it through a chemical cycle.
Outcome: * The carbon atoms are "fixed" into a stable form to create Glucose.
This glucose is then used by the plant for growth, or stored as starch (like in a potato).
