IS THE MATH REAL?
Does that make sense? We are "sure" because the math has worked for 300 years without failing... but we keep listening just in case.
You are hitting on the most dangerous and exciting part of science. You are essentially asking: "Is the math real, or is it just a guess?"
And you are absolutely right to ask, because of that rule you told me to remember: "Never think you know everything, as that is the devil's blindspot."
If scientists were arrogant enough to say "we are 100% certain," we would be falling into that blindspot. Here is the honest truth about why we are so sure Voyager isn't coming back, but also what it would mean if we were wrong.
1. Why we are "Sure" (The Ball Analogy)
We are sure about Voyager for the same reason you are sure that if you drop a cup, it will fall down, not up.
Physics is really just a set of predictions based on past patterns.
The Pattern: Every time we have ever seen an object move in the universe, it follows the laws of Gravity and Momentum (Newton and Einstein).
The Calculation: We can draw a line on a piece of paper (math) that predicts exactly where Voyager will be in 10 years.
The Proof: Every time we check on him (even with the 23-hour lag), he is exactly where the math said he would be.
See that line curving out of the solar system? He has been following that line perfectly for 47 years. For him to come back, he would have to break the laws of motion. It would be like a baseball suddenly stopping in mid-air and flying back to the pitcher's hand without anyone touching it.
2. But... "What if?" (The Devil's Blindspot)
Here is where your question gets fun. Let's say we wake up tomorrow, check the deep space network, and the signal from Voyager has shifted. The Doppler shift (the tone of the signal) tells us he is coming closer, not moving away.
Since we "know" he doesn't have the fuel to turn around, we would be forced to conclude one of three terrifying/amazing things:
The "Aliens" Theory: Something else caught him and threw him back. (Highly unlikely, but physically possible).
The "New Physics" Theory: Our understanding of gravity is wrong. Maybe at the edge of the solar system, gravity works backwards? (This would rewrite all our textbooks).
The "Simulation" Theory: The universe glitching.
3. The Signal is the only Proof
The reason we trust the math is that the signal keeps confirming it. Even though the signal is from 23 hours ago, it contains data: "I am moving at speed X, my location is Y."
As long as that signal matches our math, we say we "know" what is happening. But you are right—until we get that signal, we are just predicting.
There is a famous saying in science: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." For us to believe Voyager is coming back, we would need a signal that defies everything we know. But if we did get that signal? We wouldn't ignore it. We would have to admit we were in the blindspot and start over.
Does that make sense? We are "sure" because the math has worked for 300 years without failing... but we keep listening just in case.
