GALILEO
We started as a small interior design firm in downtown Michigan, aiming to help home buyers make do with the new space that they had acquired. It soon became obvious that it would make sense to help our clients see beyond the walls and floor plans and be there with them from the get-go. Currently, we offer house realtor, interior design, and architecture services in order to help our customers find their forever homes as seamlessly and painlessly as possible.
Galileo mission
The Galileo mission was a landmark NASA project that provided a wealth of knowledge about Jupiter and its moons. Launched in 1989 and concluding in 2003, it was the first spacecraft to orbit an outer planet and the first to deploy a probe into a gas giant's atmosphere.
Here are the key details of the mission:
* Spacecraft Components: The Galileo spacecraft consisted of two main parts: an orbiter designed to circle Jupiter and study the planet and its moons over a long period, and an atmospheric probe designed to plunge into Jupiter's atmosphere and take direct measurements.
* Timeline:
* Launch: October 18, 1989, aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
* Journey: To reach Jupiter, Galileo used gravitational assist flybys of Venus and Earth, a route that took it on a six-year journey through the inner solar system.
* Arrival: It arrived at Jupiter on December 7, 1995. The atmospheric probe had been released five months earlier in July.
* Probe Entry: On the day of arrival, the probe successfully entered Jupiter's atmosphere, transmitting data for about 58 minutes before being destroyed by the immense pressure and heat.
* Orbital Mission: The orbiter began its primary mission, which lasted for nearly two years. It was extended three times, ultimately lasting for nearly eight years in orbit around Jupiter.
* End of Mission: On September 21, 2003, NASA deliberately crashed the orbiter into Jupiter's atmosphere to prevent any possibility of it contaminating the moon Europa, which is considered a potential habitat for life.
Key Discoveries and Achievements:
The Galileo mission revolutionized our understanding of the Jovian system. Its major findings include:
* Subsurface Oceans: Galileo provided strong evidence for the existence of a liquid saltwater ocean beneath the icy surface of Jupiter's moon Europa. It also found indications of similar subsurface oceans on Ganymede and Callisto. This has made these moons prime targets in the search for extraterrestrial life.
* Volcanism on Io: The mission provided detailed observations of the intense volcanic activity on the moon Io, revealing it to be the most volcanically active body in the solar system. It found that Io's volcanism is driven by tidal heating from Jupiter's immense gravity.
* Magnetic Field of Ganymede: Galileo discovered that Ganymede is the only known moon in the solar system to have its own internally generated magnetic field.
* Jupiter's Atmosphere: The atmospheric probe provided the first direct measurements of Jupiter's atmosphere. It discovered thunderstorms many times larger than Earth's, found unexpectedly low levels of water, and measured wind speeds of up to 330 mph. It also detected a new, intense radiation belt above the planet's cloud tops.
* Asteroid Encounters: On its way to Jupiter, Galileo became the first spacecraft to fly by an asteroid, 951 Gaspra, in 1991. In 1993, it flew by a second asteroid, 243 Ida, and discovered the first known moon orbiting an asteroid, which was named Dactyl.
* Comet Impact: In 1994, Galileo was in a unique position to observe the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter, providing direct images of the impact sites.
Despite suffering a major mechanical failure early in the mission when its high-gain antenna failed to fully deploy, mission engineers were able to devise workarounds using the smaller low-gain antenna, allowing the mission to achieve almost all of its scientific objectives.
